History

Historical Development of the Conference

The colloquium was once a prominent part of the regular activities of the Dubrovnik Inter-University Centre for Post-Graduate Studies which developed a dialogue between the West and the East. First directors of the colloquium were Jürgen Habermas and Gajo Petrovic. It has been held under the general title “Philosophy and Social Science.”

In 1992, the tragic developments of the civil war in former Yugoslavia forced us to relocate temporarily to the island of Ischia in Italy. Since 1993, the conference has generously been given a home by the Institute of Philosophy at the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic in Prague, particularly in the Villa Lanna, a Neo-Renaissance landmark building located in a residential neighbourhood of Bubeneč in Prague.

The political and intellectual context has changed dramatically since the early seventies when the colloquium started being organized but critical social and political theory is still important.
